2025 ASCE Region 10 Distinguished Lecture
Date: 18 June 2025
Time: 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Venue: (ID: 898 8731 4147, Password: 446402)
Registration: https://forms.office.com/r/ZWFzqaChxd?origin=lprLink
Activities: This lecture introduces advanced numerical modeling techniques for
predicting geotechnical failures and geohazards, including landslides,
debris flows, and infrastructure collapses, in an era of climate
uncertainty. We will demonstrate how established methods such as the
Finite Element Method (FEM), Material Point Method (MPM), Discrete
Element Method (DEM), and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
effectively address challenges in simulating soil-structure interactions,
multi-phase fluid-solid coupling, and cascading hazard dynamics. We
emphasize the importance of hybrid approaches to overcome limitations
in capturing complex multiphysics and nonlinear material behavior
associated with various failure patterns. This understanding is crucial for
tackling the complexities of geotechnical failures and illustrates how
advanced numerical modeling can bridge theoretical insights with
actionable insights for resilient geotechnical design and disaster
preparedness.
